Bill Bruford's Earthworks: Bill Bruford (drums); Patrick Clahar (soprano & tenor saxophones); Steve Hamilton (piano, keyboards); Mark Hodgson (bass).Recorded at Livingston Studios, London, England in November 1998.This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. In 1998 drummer Bill Bruford reformed his long-running group, Earthworks, as an acoustic quartet. Long known as a champion of the electric avant-garde, A PART, AND YET APART is Bruford's foray into the acoustic jazz mainstream, albeit with his own unique slant on the subject. The group features three other stunning musicians including Steve Hamilton (piano), Mark Hodgson (bass) and Patrick Clahar (saxophone). It is Bruford, however, that is the underlying force that drives this musical machine; his keen sense of taste and incomparable grasp of the rhythmically peculiar is unmistakable and present in every note of the session. The use of odd time signatures is prevalent on most pieces including the funky opener "No Truce With The Furies" and the very percussive "Footloose And Fancy Free," featuring a staggering solo by the leader. A traditional approach is always employed, however, as on more swinging selections like the mellow title track and the boisterous "Some Shiver, While He Cavorts." Bruford's ballad "Sarah's Still Life" offers a quiet respite before the group launches into the adventurous "The Emperor's New Clothes." Other highlights of this brilliant session include the swinging "Curiouser And Curiouser" and the blisteringly quick bopper "Eyes On The Horizon."
